Chewacla State Park near Auburn, Alabama has a diverse range of activities to offer and can be used as an overnight experience or just as a day trip. If going for an overnight option you’ll find primitive (tent only) camp sites and RV sites. I do not recommend using the primitive camping because the sites sit in an area that looks like it can flood easily. You can place a tent in one of the RV sites which offer plenty of space beyond the RV pads and have an enjoyable experience. Meaning this is not one of those campgrounds where RVs are sitting closely packed, and quite suitable for tent campers like yours truly.
This park was developed by the CCC and is fixated on a man made lake, along with a dam on the backside that creates an overflow man made waterfall. Hiking is a mess of little interconnected trails going around the lake and a stream that feeds it, where you can pick and chose if you want to take it easy or go for several miles. No matter what you do you end up circling the lake and stream, finding the waterfall, getting some good scenic views of vegetation in, or if you’re into mountain biking the trails are set up with special biking obstacles to play on.
I kayaked the lake, saw several people enjoying fishing it, and there’s a beach area that probably is quite popular on summer days for swimmers and picnickers. There’s enough going on that this can either be a one day adventure where you check out the falls and do a token walk around, or you can stretch it out a bit, camp, fish and hike every interconnected inch of the place.
