Deep Creek – Great Smoky Mountains National Park

The Deep Creek area of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park feels like a detached, far less wild experience than the rest of the park.  Located on the southern side of the park in North Carolina, you actually have to drive out of the park to re-enter into this area.  Deep Creek is a campground in itself, recreation area, and there are 3 waterfalls.  The waterfalls are named Juney Whank Falls, Toms Branch Falls & Indian Falls.  Everything here individually takes less than a mile to walk to if you stick to the established paths, and for 2 of those just follow Deep Creek.  This area is fairly flat, people walk their dogs here, and there was even a group doing a video shoot for a river tubing company while I was there, using Toms Branch Falls as a backdrop.  So water recreation on the creek must be popular.  None of the falls were massively impressive, probably because this lacked the element of needing a hard core hike to explore, which always adds some joy to reaching a waterfall destination.  I did not feel like I was out in the wilderness, I felt like I was at a public recreation area adjoining a city.
