The high point of South Carolina is Sassafras Mountain with an elevation of 3553 feet. This has been a favorite high point experience for me because the Sassafras Mountain Observation Tower is built on the state lines for South Carolina & North Carolina. So not only did I get to visit a high point, but I got to stand in two states at once while on a high point! This is also interesting because the entity that maintains the high point is the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, instead of it being a park or forest service sort of place. If you’re wondering what that means for visiting it is simple: It’s free, it is open daily from 1 hour before sunrise to 1 hour after sunset(according to a sign there), and if you’re familiar with South Carolina’s Palmetto Trail, well it so happens that it comes here as well. For my purposes I just drove right up to the high point though, no trail required.
A few more notes – there are no special facilities here. You won’t find a gift shop or staff. You will only find vault toilets. You’ll technically be in the are known as Jocassee Gorges, which is kind of a confusing catch all name for the region composed of many things.
