The Tuxachanie National Recreation Trail is an 11.9 mile trek through plains, savannas, and swamps. I got onto it at the HWY 49 trailhead, but if you look at the map you’ll find other access points at Airy Lake and the P.O.W. Camp. Being from elsewhere along the Gulf of Mexico I found this trail both new and familiar at the same time. Mostly flat, lots of sand, all the coastal vegetation (reminds me of the Florida National Scenic Trail), and so many bridges! Staying just down the road at the Big Biloxi Campground made reaching this trail simple.
While on the trail I ran into all sorts of people doing various activities. There were many dog walkers, two vegetarian hunters tracking oyster mushrooms, a jogger, a lady that was determined she was going to go the distance to the end and back in one day which by my math is over 20+ miles and I doubt that ended up happening. It’s a great flat easy hike though, with decent exercise.
