Moss Falls

I feel the need to make a note of my experience trying to find Moss Falls in Georgia.  This fall is supposedly along a creek called Double Branch and may also be known as Double Branch Falls.  It is also known to some people that paddle on the Flint River as Dripping Rocks.  Anyway I set off to find Moss Falls using some information that suggested the route to it was to find Camp Thunder, a Boy Scout camp, not far from Sprewell Bluffs Park for what it is worth.  The Double Branch creek is somewhere on the property behind the camp, and a network of misc trails indirectly will supposedly lead you to the waterfall.

Using the Alltrails app I was able to see the network of misc trails, and after trying to find access points I noticed they have names like “Deer Run” and whatnot.  The primary use seems to be as hunting trails, and the issue I ran into here is that the lands are marked at trailheads as needing a hunting pass or some sort of other Georgia land access pass to enter.  I was not prepared with any of this, so had to abort my quest.

Meanwhile in that area along the Flint River you’ll find various canoe and kayak liveries that offer a shuttle upstream.  One of them called the “Flint River Adventure Center” which is located very close to Sprewell Bluffs Park, can drop you into the river and on their brochure it says “Dripping Rocks”, which is apparently 3 miles south of Hwy 18, will let you “take a shower in nature under the waterfall only a short hike up Double Branch from the river” into Boy Scout Land.  This might be a future option for me to try, and I did not because the river was low that day I visited, but the perk would be coming at it by kayak instead of car would mean no car would be left without a permit on Boy Scout turf.  However I do wonder about the legality of accessing the same lands even if by water.  One would assume if it was problematic a livery wouldn’t be able to advertise openly about it though.
