Red Top Mountain State Park, Georgia is really more of a lake oriented park than a mountain park. You’re basically getting 12,000 acre lake that’d be awesome if you wanted to do water activities like boating or fishing. Otherwise from my perspective since I really don’t do those things it is a few cute nature trails and a campground that I’ve basically used as a cheap hotel on my way heading north instead of stopping in the all too near Atlanta. Let me say I did not have a great experience, as I went in 2022 during campground renovations. The site I booked I arrived at after dark to find out there was construction equipment all around it and the only bathroom near it was locked up and being worked on. If I ever go back they will hopefully have completed the renovations and that annoyances will be history.
So on the positive side, this is one of those campgrounds that seems like you can slip either a tent (me) into or an RV, and if you know what you’re doing you’ll find a site next to the water because the view of Lake Allatoona is great. I wandered down to a little beach area from the campground and found rocks that were rich in lots of shiny minerals too, which makes sense since historically a lot of iron and the like was mined in this area. Their nature trails were pretty much accessible to just about anyone and the only real gripe that won’t clear up I have with the place is that you can hear traffic in the distance because this is too close to interstates and big cities. I’m guessing however it is popular for those living in or near Atlanta to fill the place up in summer and have a great time on the water, which is what these kind of state parks probably are best for. That’s probably a whole new level of noise but also great fun for the boat and beach crowd. My cranky self needs to slink off to more remote places.
